I really want to go hiking for a few weeks in the mountains along side a river so i can keep myself oriented on where i am. But i can’t do this in a park like yosemite because you have specific places you can stay and you have to stay on a trail. Where is a nice picturesque backdrop to truly backpack the mountains?

Theres allot good places in Durango, Co and in Silverton, Co. you’ll have to call the state park on fire regulations, like most place it varies,it just depends on how dry it is. last year they let us have fires, usually when theres a fire band they still let you use a small propane grill.
This the perfect place:
The Appalachian Trail. Anywhere on the trail is beautiful. I use to hike the sections of the AT in NC and there are some sections that are truly beautiful, especially in the Great Smokey Mountains and the section over Roan Mountain on the NC/TN border.
